​British Studies Centre participated in hosting the 2025 Annual Conference of the British Studies Branch, Chinese Association for European Studies

On June 7, 2025, the "2025 Annual Conference of the British Studies Branch of the Chinese Association for European Studies and the Academic Seminar on 'Britain and the World after the Labour Party Came to Power'" was successfully held at Zhejiang Yuexiu University. The annual conference was jointly hosted by the British Studies Branch of the Chinese Association for European Studies and School of English Studies, Zhejiang Yuexiu University, while British Studies Centre of Beijing Foreign Studies University participated in hosting the conference as well. The conference attracted nearly 50 experts and scholars from many universities and academic institutions across the country to conduct in-depth discussions on topics such as politics, diplomacy, economy, and culture after the British Labour Party came to power.

At the opening ceremony, Professor Zhu Xinfu, Assistant to the President of Zhejiang Yuexiu University, delivered a welcome speech. Researcher Zhao Jianglin, deputy director of The Institute of European Studies (IES) at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Researcher Li Jingkun, president of the British Studies Branch, and Professor Wang Zhanpeng, vice president of the branch, director of our centre and executive vice president of Academy of Regional and Global Governance, BFSU, delivered speeches respectively, expecting the participating scholars to provide new perspectives for British Studies with Chinese wisdom.

In the keynote speech session, Professor Chen Xiaolv of Nanjing University analyzed the impact of Britain's "great power mentality" and colonial heritage on its diplomacy with the theme of "Great Power Mentality and Global Vision in British Diplomacy". Professor Ma Xiaolin of Zhejiang International Studies University expressed his views on "The US trade war may change international relations and geopolitical pattern", emphasizing the far-reaching impact of the trade war.

The three keynote reports and sub-forums revolved around "British Diplomacy", "British Politics" and "British History and Culture". Experts had in-depth exchanges on topics such as British party policies, European security order and the evolution of British civilization. Professor Cui Hongjian of Beijing Foreign Studies University gave a keynote speech entitled "The driving force and limit of the Labour government's foreign policy adjustment - a comparison of the perspectives of UK-EU and UK-China relations", analyzing the driving force and limit of the Labour Party Starmer government's foreign policy adjustment, and pointed out that its adjustment of its policies toward Europe and China faces many challenges. Zhang Junhan, a lecturer at the School of English and International Studies, BFSU, and Lu Zhun, a doctoral student, reported on "The Labour government's soft power diplomacy under the background of Trump 2.0" and "The development of the UK's willing alliance to aid Ukraine" at the sub-forum.

At the closing ceremony, Song Xiaomin, the Secretary-General of the Chinese Association for European Studies, summarized the conference, and Professor Chen Wentao, vice president of Zhejiang Yuexiu University, delivered the closing speech. The successful convening of the meeting has injected new academic impetus into the development of Sino-British relations and regional country studies.
