On March 28, Beijing Foreign Studies University held the “British Studies Five-Year Plan” expert consultation conference, a division of the nations and areas studies center of Ministry of Education. The plan was drafted by the British Studies Center, together with the British Studies Center of Shanghai Foreign Studies University. Many experts and scholars attended the conference, including those from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Chinese Institute of Contemporary International Relations, Chinese Institute of International Studies, BFSU Institute of International Studies along with the School of English and International Studies of BFSU. Professor Wang Zhanpeng of British Studies Center introduced the compilation of the plan. More than ten experts have offered their advice on the compilation and modification of the plan. These experts include: Ma Zhengang, former ambassador to UK; Feng Zhongping, vice president of China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations; Nie Ruilin, an officer from the Ministry of Education; Yang Xiaochun, director general of the Office of European Affairs; Chang Jian, an officer from Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ye Zhao, an officer from the Ministry of Commerce; Liu Fei, a researcher from European Studies Center of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Cong Peng, Director of Institute of International Studies in BFSU. They offered suggestions concerning the impact of national policies on British Studies in colleges, how to ensure the research target os upheld to meet the need of British studies, how to deal with the relationship between fundamental research and applied research and how to enhance the cooperation between colleges, ministries and research institutions.
