On 23rd July 2014, the international section of People’s Daily published Professor Wang Zhanpeng’s article entitled Under Dual Challenges of Global Systems Adjustment and National Power Shifts, Britain Is Not Willing to Admit a Middle-Sized Power. Professor Wang of BFSU British Studies Centre holds that Britain will stick to its strategic goal of safeguarding itself as a great world power, but it may shift its focus from manipulating material instruments to utilizing its historically accumulated and sophisticated institutions and thoughts. He points out that the fulcrum of traditional British foreign policy is to maintain and, at the same time, subtly change the relationships between Britain and America, and between Britain and the EU. Under new circumstances, the UK is trying its best to be active in international affairs, but keeping a balance between major world powers. The article asserts that diplomacy is now regarded as a tool to help Britain achieve economic prosperity, and that emerging markets are given higher status in its diplomatic layout.
