On 15th October 2014, Richard Sanders, Professor of North Hampton University and visiting professor of BFSU gave a lecture entitled “Scottish Independence Referendum and Its Influence” at the School of English and International Studies, BFSU. Sanders reviewed the referendum one month before and believed that the Cameron government made a series of mistakes in its process. He said that the result of 55% saying no and 45% yes to Scottish independence did not imply a success to the British government. Though Scotland would not achieve their independence in the short run, we could not rule out the possibility that Scottish independence would once become a major issue in the future. The high percentage of Scottish youth voting for independence was a wake-up call for the UK people, he warned.
